Build notes for Short Stirling
I have not yet started this build but any preparatory research is detailed below

As no Stirlings were permanently based in Devon or Cornwall I have chosen to model the Mk.V transport, of which several made their journey to the Far East via St. Mawgan. The particular example I plan to build is serial number PJ897 which spent long enough there to have St. Mawgan appear on its record card, as noted by the Air-Britain 'Stirling File'. There is also a photo of this aircraft in the same book, showing it in camouflage which, for transport aircraft of this period, was Dark Slate Grey and Extra Dark Sea Grey uppersurfaces with Azure Blue undersurfaces. Warpaint 15 is a good reference for this scheme.

The main differences of the Stirling V when compared to the bomber versions were a new nose fairing (with opening door) in place of the turret and bomb aimers position, a fairing with external ribs in place of the rear turret and engine cooling fans.

At the moment I have an Airfix kit (the only choice), Falcon vacform canopies for the bomber variant and an old Contrail vacform conversion kit plus some Aeroclub white metal cooling fans. All these items will require some effort to turn into a presentable model so I am considering purchasing the newly announced (Nov 2006) Magna Resin conversion. Previous experience of Magna kits suggests it will need care during preparation and assembly but will provide a better result than the Contrail kit for similar (or less) effort.
